What are the medical requirements for becoming a surrogate mother?
Our partnered Reproductive Endocrinologist Dr. Tourgeman explains the screening process to become a surrogate mother.
The requirements to become a surrogate mother are mostly medical, as all the prospective surrogates will need to pass through a detailed screening that includes an extensive questionnaire, blood tests, urine tests (drug tests) and psychological evaluations.
During the screening, the doctors will observe things like the prospective surrogate's history of medical conditions, body mass index, previous pelvic surgeries, blood pressure, infectious diseases, in addition to their pregnancy history, as it is a requirement that surrogates already have had previous delivery with no complications. Finally, the uterus and fallopian tubes will be examined to make sure that there are no impediments to becoming pregnant.
